Art Hotel: Which of you thought of getting married first?

We got engaged 12 years ago and have been thinking of getting married ever since. Initially, we wanted to wait until it was possible to do it in Poland. We dreamed that as soon as it happened we would be one of the first couples to walk down the aisle.

Before the pandemic, and thus, about 10 years after the engagement :), we came to realise that maybe we would never live to see the day when single-sex marriages or any other forms of regulating our relationship legally would be possible. So, we considered getting married at the Botanical Garden in Berlin. But the pandemic changed the rules of weddings in Germany so this idea was dropped.

In December 2022, during a pre-Christmas meeting with our friends, we agreed that in the following year, we would go to the Equality Parade in Malta. In March of the following year, we decided to combine a civil wedding in Malta with a wedding for our families in Poland.

Art Hotel: How would you rate the experience of getting married abroad?

Everyone says it’s the best day in your life, but I (Gosia) never really believed it. To me, it seemed a stressful to-do list you need to tackle. But fortunately I was mistaken, totally!

It was the most beautiful day of our life together. There were only our friends at the ceremony, the ones we intended to go to the Parade with. I think that it was the relaxed approach towards this, as everyone calls it, big day that made it perfect. No limousine, no hundreds of guests, no flowers, no orchestra and no hall worth millions of coins. Despite this, we had a marvellous ceremony in the garden, a photo session and a wonderful dinner with seafood at a small restaurant.

We were a bit afraid of the session – two girls dressed in white embracing each other in the old town. You know how it could end in Poland. In Malta, everyone we met congratulated us and wished us well. It was great to celebrate this day with the Maltese people.

Art Hotel: What was your criteria when choosing a venue for your wedding in Poland?

Back in March, we sent out a lot of enquiries to various places that seemed interesting to us. We wanted a reception, not a typical wedding. We wanted 50 people, a dance floor, a party until around midnight, no second wedding day, an easy access by public transport means or taxi. It seemed an easy task at first, but, as we soon found out, was nothing of the sort. Most places offer weddings for 100 people, with the second wedding day included, and our plan for the reception was so much different than that.

Friends told us about the Art Hotel. I presumed it wouldn't be possible anyway – the facility is located in the very centre of the city. We thought the wedding would cost a fortune or there would be no available dates. But we still took the chance and arranged a meeting.

Ultimately, it turned out that we had 2 halls to choose from and all our plans were perfectly possible. What is more, the venue was much more economic than many facilities outside the city centre that we had initially chosen. We got a wonderful room for the Newlyweds and the whole hotel staff was super friendly and helpful.

Art Hotel: How do you recall your wedding preparations?

For most of the time, we were laughing that this wedding was our easiest life project. We chose outfits from chain stores, invitations from Allegro and a menu that we tried in advance. The longest part was probably looking for the shoes!

These crazy preparations that are typical for any wedding took place on the eve of the ceremony. With Gosia’s maid of honour. We made the bouquets for the tables ourselves, because the composition designed by Gosia appeared to be too modest for the florists and they didn’t want to take on the task. So, we did it ourselves, the job was finished at 2:00 am, can you imagine?

The other maid of honour helped us on the wedding day itself by taking care of the Guests so that we could get ourselves ready in peace. The Art Hotel took care of all the rest, a very professional job.

Art Hotel: What was the nicest touch of the wedding day?

The fact that almost all our of your closest family and friends came to the wedding – and only one person refused to come. They all had lots of fun, so we felt like an ordinary couple on this day. And that was fantastic.

Art Hotel: What if you had to say one thing / give a piece of advice to LGBTQ+ people planning their wedding...?

Don't let others tell you what you may and may not do. If you want to get married, get married - there are many options

Art Hotel: Would you like to recommend the service providers who helped you plan your special day?

Yes, we wholeheartedly recommend:

  • @green - for their help with the hall decor
  • @komsta.tworzy - for the wedding reportage in Poland
  • @monika_marszalek_fotografia - for the photo shoot in Malta and convincing us to pose :)
  • @slubzagranica - for organising the wedding in Malta
  • And of course the Art Hotel in Wroclaw - for making us feel the true stars of this most beautiful day.

We would also recommend ourselves if anyone had any nagging questions :)
